The other day in the French capital, Paris, Xiaomi held an international presentation of its first smartphone Pocophone F1, released under a new sub-brand POCO, not so long ago in India. Today we tell about the first impressions received during a first acquaintance with the novelty.
Pocophone F1 got compared to flagship Xiaomi Mi 8 pretty simple design without frills. The hull shape is simple, and the material was chosen not glass, not metal and plastic. Moreover, the surface of the back cover smooth, without drawing and texturing, which further simplifies the overall picture. There are, however, modification with a black back panel, made of aramid fiber, Kevlar from DuPont™, she looks much more interesting, and that’s the unit we received for testing.
However, if any external decoration, building Pocophone F1 remains practical and easy to hold in the hand, not slippery and does not collect fingerprints. Camera came out fairly thick and heavy, but at least, this is due to the presence of bulky built-in battery 4000 mAh and a large six-inch IPS-screen.
The first thing that catches the eye is located along the Central longitudinal axis of the chamber. She shifted to the left so that often overlap with the fingers — not the most judicious decision, as a time to experiment. The fingerprint scanner is incredibly fast, it is located directly under the camera. Pad it a little recessed, finger quickly finds her, and manages not to ruin the optics.
The camera itself is dual: the main module Sony IMX363 has a sensor resolution of 12 megapixels (sensor size 1/2,55″, pixel size 1.4 µm), and optics with an aperture of f/1,9. Has fast autofocus technology dual pixel PDAF, but no optical image stabilization. Additional module with 5 MP used only for the implementation of the bokeh effect in portrait mode.
Judging by first impressions, the camera copes with shooting in daylight, giving high detail with good sharpness across the field of the frame, but in the low lighting also shows good opportunities. Although, of course, up to the flagship Huawei P20 Pro and Pixel 2 XL camera in night shooting does not hold. But flash is incredibly bright.
Elements on the housing located in their traditional places. The top end is placed under the 3.5 mm audio Jack and a second microphone; at the bottom mounted speaker and USB Type-C connector; sides — mechanical keys and a hybrid connector for the two nano-SIM, combined with a connector for memory cards microSD. Dynamics, it is necessary to notice that work in the stereo pair (top and bottom) and they are very loud. Give good sound, clean, bright and full-bodied. The sound in the headphones is also no complaints, all on a good level.
The proverbial «Bang» on the screen, but you can hide it in settings. Face Unlock is incredibly fast, and thanks to the infrared sensor to operate even in the dark — checked. Large and bright 6-inch display has a resolution 2246×1080 pixels and a density of about 415 ppi. Top — 2.5 D Corning Gorilla glass with oleophobic coating quality.
The front camera has a 20 Megapixel sensor with Super Pixel, combining the information of four pixels are collected into one. And front and main camera support system artificial intelligence (AI) for various shooting modes such as portrait mode, Beautify and clever definition scenes. In fact, with a portrait mode and a background defocus camera in good light, handles great, but in limited lighting is noticeably folded. Sharpness is falling, the detail, too, and shake causes blurring, it takes a very steady hand.
It works on Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC 845, equipped with a cooling system with heat pipe LiquidCool Technology and a powerful GPU with support for OpenGL ES API 3.2 and Vulkan. There are configurations with 64/128/256 GB of internal memory and 6 GB of RAM. X20 LTE modem with support for data transfer speeds up to 1.2 Gbps, in theory, should support all popular Russian frequencies LTE. But the NFC is so necessary for contactless payment, the novelty doesn’t, and it’s sad. As a result, in AnTuTu the smartphone gives about 260 thousand points in GeekBench, almost 2400 in single and 9,000 in multi-modes.
Novelty equipped with a capacious built-in battery 4000 mAh. Its charge, according to first estimates, enough for about 4 hour games. The smartphone runs a special version of MIUI called in the company POCO Launcher slightly modified, with even more features than the regular MIUI. It is already possible to download it separately, but stable operation is guaranteed only on smartphones with MIUI 9 and 10.
However, while in the first firmware for the European market, unlike the Asian, there is no support for recognition of individuals or groups of icons by color, and more. All of this will be later supported update over the air OTA.
In Russia Pocophone F1 will be available with two types of rear panel — graphite black and steel blue. Retail price starts from 23 999 rubles for a model 6 GB+64 GB, and a 25 999 rubles will be offered a model with a memory of 6 GB+128 GB. Perhaps this is the most attractive at the moment, the price for the smartphone of the most powerful and most desirable mobile platform Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, so even with good cameras, nice sounding stereo speakers and a large, bright screen. The head of Department of development of Global POCO Jai Mani calls the first child «gaming smartphone», and it is, apparently, true. As for autonomy, there should be more to look at, but she promises not to be a failure.
The device will go on sale in Russia on August 30 in the official store Mi.com and in the network of official stores Mi Store. Other retailers, including DNS and Tmall, will also begin selling soon.
